Re: segmented downloading
Hey!
The downloading clients are compiled with search websites that offer free downloads. The software searches these sites with the name and size of the filename you currently download. It will select the severs which match the queries... If only filename matches it will check for size. If it matches then only it starts the download. Its like multiple mirrors of a single file.

Re: Segmented downloading
With client downloading software, the one single file is downloaded, in parallel, from several distinct sources or uploaders of the file. This can help a group of users with asymmetric connections, such as ADSL to provide a high total bandwidth to one downloader, and to handle peaks in download demand.
Segmented downloading is also known as multisource downloading, swarming download which is a more efficient way of downloading files from many peers at once.
Users mostly download than they upload. Keep this in mind, most IP networks are designed with an expected (Download:Upload) ratio of 3:1 or more.
