You can use the QuickTime Sample Movie (in the QuickTime folder) to make sure the QuickTime Plug-in is installed and working. If you don't have the QuickTime Sample Movie on your hard drive, you can use the Sorenson Sample movie available.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
To test the QuickTime plug-in:
1. Open a new browser window.
2. Locate the QuickTime Sample Movie in the QuickTime folder, and position the window so you can see both the file and the browser window.
3. Drag the QuickTime Sample Movie icon onto the browser window.
A new window should appear and the movie should play. If you see an alert box, or if the window has no graphics, or plays no sound, try these steps:
1. Recopy the plug-in into the browser's plug-ins folder
2. Reinstall the browser.
3. If you have Mac OS 9 or earlier, troubleshoot system extensions conflicts.

Re: Problem with sound in web browser movie
The solution to solve the Internet movie no sound or audio output is to reset the audio setting to original configuration:
1. Open “Audio MIDI Setup” (/Applications/Utilities/), then check the “Audio Output” setting.
2. Change the “Audio Output” setting to 44100.0 Hz.
3. Quit Audio MIDI Setup.
If the Audio Output setting is grayed out or disabled, go to “Properties For” tab in Audio MIDI Setup, and select “Built in Output”.

Re: Problem with sound in web browser movie
MPEG Video software decoders work well if your processor has enough power. For example a Pentium 100 Mhz or over can play MPEG-1 Video. There are two categories of software MPEG Video players: the public-domain or free ones and the commercial ones.
Public-domain or free MPEG software players often play only video (no audio), may have a poor frame synchronization (or none at all) and may not be as fast as commercial players. You get what you pay for! On the other hand, source code is sometimes available for those interested in understanding how MPEG works.
