Why Kindle for iPhone Won’t Hurt Kindle

Some tech analysts are wondering if the free Kindle for iPhone
application will cannibalize sales of Amazon's Kindle e-book reader. A
BusinessWeek article suggests that Amazon's no-cost app for the iPhone
and iPod Touch may give consumers one less reason to buy the pricey
Kindle 2:

"'In an economy like we have today, I don't see people shelling out
hundreds of dollars for a device which replicates something they
already have,' says Bill Mirabito, head of e-commerce researcher B2C
Partners."

But while the Kindle 2 certainly is no bargain at $359, I doubt that
Kindle for iPhone will cut into Kindle hardware sales one bit. If
anything, the app may actually spur Kindle sales by introducing
millions of iPhone/iPod Touch users to the world of e-books.

By comparison, reading an e-book with a Kindle is a pleasant
experience. With its paperback-size proportions, Amazon's reader
displays a full page at a time. Its large, ergonomic buttons make it
easy to turn the book's virtual pages, and you can tap the screen to
access certain controls. And its non-backlit e-ink display is far
easier on the eyes than the iPhone's backlit screen, particularly if
you plan to read for an hour or two.

Furthermore, Kindle for iPhone is intentionally crippled. You can't,
for instance, access Kindle's blogs, magazines or newspapers. But
since iPhone users can get most of that content via the Web anyway,
that's probably not a major shortcoming.

IBM Research and SAP Demonstrate New

In a joint demonstration at CeBIT, IBM and SAP previewed a technology
that enables the live migration of SAP applications across remote IBM
POWER6 systems via cloud computing.

The technology, developed as a part of the European
Union-fundedRESERVOIR cloud computing project, is designed to provide
companies with a range of cloud computing solutions to meet their
specific business needs.

Cloud computing is an emerging approach to shared infrastructure in
which large pools of systems are linked together to provide IT
services. This approach to delivering and consuming IT provides
answers to the challenges many businesses face today: the immense
complexity of sprawling data centers, the growing cost of energy, and
the need to dynamically adapt the allocation of IT resources to
constantly changing workloads and business priorities.

In this technology demonstration, IBM and SAP show how users can run
enterprise applications in the cloud, in particular demonstrating the
migration of workloads across physical servers and across data
centers. This demonstration is another instance of IBM working with
partners across the IT industry to gain insights about creating and
configuring workloads, and help companies move to the clouds as
smoothly as possible.

"The breakthrough we're showing today is that applications can
flexibly move across remote physical servers, regardless of location
-- which makes our work a strong enabling technology for the cloud,"
explained Dr. Joachim Schaper, VP EMEA of SAP Research. "Specifically,
in cloud-scale environments, service providers will need to provide
users with access to services across the cloud. Service providers will
need to compete on performance and Quality of Service -- and so the
future cloud will need to support application mobility across
disparate data centers to enhance performance."

Digi Fastest ARM9 Based Wired and Wireless

igi International today introduced the ConnectCore 9M 2443 and
ConnectCoreWi-9M 2443, the industry's fastest ARM9-based, network
enabled embedded core modules. Supporting both Windows CE and Linux
operating systems, the pin-compatible wired and 802.11a/b/g core
modules feature state-of-the-art peripherals, rich development
resources and speed making the products ideal for display and embedded
multimedia applications. This includes embedded applications in
networked displays, medical devices, building access controls, energy

Microsoft: No patch Tuesday for Excel security hole

Microsoft has announced that the patch tuesday will release three
updates, including one with the stamp 'critical'. A patch for a
dangerous vulnerability in Excel, however, even though the bug is
already actively exploited.

The bug in the xls file format, which appears in all versions of
Excel, according to several security companies now actively exploited
by malicious. Using an Excel file can be manipulated a PC is infected
with malware. Although a Microsoft security advisory on the issue is
delivered, the next patch will not fix include round. Furthermore, the
software giant to them that only a limited number of attack attempts

Microsoft's new system easier for switch

Microsoft Corp is developing a feature in its new operating system
that allows users to turn off Internet Explorer and other key
Microsoft programs.

The new feature is a major step for the world's largest software
company, which has been accused by competitors and regulators of
forcing consumers to run its own software, squeezing rivals' offerings
out of the marketplace.

"In addition to the features that were already available to turn on or
off in Windows Vista, we've added the following features to the list
in Windows 7," said a Microsoft blog published on Friday, listing
Internet Explorer 8, Windows Media Player and a host of other
Microsoft programs.

The new design will make it easier for users to remove any traces of
Internet Explorer from their desktop, although the software will
remain installed on the computer, and allow them to run other browsers
more smoothly.
Last month Google Inc, which recently launched its own Chrome browser,
joined the Mozilla foundation, producer of the Firefox Web browser,
and Norway's Opera, in protesting Microsoft's dominance in the browser
market.
In January, European regulators brought formal charges against
Microsoft for abusing its dominant market position by bundling its
Internet Explorer Web browser with its Windows operating system, which
is used in 95 percent of the world's personal computers.
